When I visit schools and libraries, I always end my Book Talk with a segment I call “You never know what an illustrator will be asked to draw next”. To prove it, I’d ask the entire audience to think of an animal and a sport. I’d call on one child for their animal and another for their sport. I stall a little while I think of the combination. Then I squint and approach the blank paper. I begin to “trace my imagination” and a sketch appears usually in about one minute.
